About us
The school started as an unregistered "Educare" Center (Pre-school) in July 1993. A community research conducted by Medunsa (Medical University of South Africa) established a need in the Bronkhorstspruit
area for a school for learners with both mental and physical
disabilities. In 1994 the center established a governing council which
culminated in the registration of the center as a school. In 1995 the school started operating under the newly established Gauteng
Department of Education. A school governing body was established as
required by the South African Schools Act of 1994. This body took over
the governance of the school to date.
Learners and community links
The
school has an enrolment of 121 learners. Of these 48 reside in St.
Mary's Home for children with disabilities. The remaining 73 are day
scholars who commute daily to school. They reside at their respective
homes with their parents. The school has a staff compliment of 9
educators, 1 occupational therapist, 1 clerk, 1 driver and 10 other
general assistants. The school is linked to the St. Mary's home
due to the educational service offered to learners. The home compliments the school program by offering training to the learners after school. The community also play an important role in the school. The highest number of learners reside locally. Therefore
their parents have the greatest representation in the School Governing
Body (SGB). Other community structures are also represented in the SGB
and School Development Team (SDT).
